Choose the right tax year

Use the year your income belongs to, and keep that year’s records together.

Tax PreCheck educational draft · Updated 2026-09-27 · 2025 questionnaire

Start with the year on your records

In Tax PreCheck, choose the completed year you want to review. For the 2025 questionnaire, gather records for January 1 through December 31, 2025. The year you open the website does not change the year those records belong to. Keep a separate folder for each year so a payment or wage statement is not copied into the wrong estimate.

Use the year selector deliberately

The selector adds a newly completed year after year-end. Calculation rules are enabled separately. Seeing a year in the list does not mean an estimate is available for it. If you change the year after entering answers, the questionnaire asks before clearing the earlier answers. Print anything you want to retain before starting another year.

Check the payment designation

A payment made in the following calendar year may still be designated for the return you are reviewing. Use the tax year shown in the payment confirmation or account record. Enter a payment only once, under the matching year, jurisdiction and owner. Leave the amount blank if you cannot establish where it was credited.

Before you continue

Check the selected year, collect both spouses’ records if applicable, and read the coverage page. This release provides restricted 2025 calculations; it does not forecast current-year income or automatically reuse earlier rules for a later year.
