An extension and a tax payment are different

Review a payment made with an extension without confusing it with permission to pay later.

Tax PreCheck educational draft · Updated 2026-09-27 · 2025 questionnaire

What the IRS extension does

An extension generally gives more time to file a federal return, not more time to pay the tax. Check the IRS extension instructions for the relevant year and any relief that applies to your situation. Tax PreCheck does not request an extension or make a payment for you.

What belongs in this questionnaire

If you made a payment designated for an extension of the 2025 return, enter the credited payment in the extension field. Do not enter the total tax you expected to owe, a future planned payment or a processing fee. A federal payment and a state payment belong in different sections.

Reconcile your records

Compare the payment confirmation, year designation and agency account record. If an amount was refunded, moved to a different year or credited differently, resolve that difference before confirming completeness. Do not repeat an extension payment in the estimated-installments field.

When more help is needed

This calculator does not reconcile amended returns, late-payment penalties, interest or previous settlements. Minnesota and Oregon have payment-timing checks within this release’s supported profiles. If a check does not fit your situation, retain the actual payment record and use the agency instructions or qualified help rather than changing the answer to force a result.
